Your Personal Glass Mandala
Introduction
Mandalas are round and we fabricate them from
15" to 48"
diameter. We find that the most popular sizes range from about 20" to
30" wide. We can also make square mandalas by adding four corners
around the circular image.
Fabricating glass mandalas is very labor
intensive. Here are the steps involved: (I
already know this, SKIP right to pricing)
-
Leaded
Stained Glass Mandalas: A pattern is created and then several copies
made; one copy is cut apart into the shape for each piece of glass; the
paper pattern is traced onto the appropriate-colored glass; the glass is cut
to shape; each piece of glass is perimeter-wrapped with lead channel; each
piece becomes a puzzle-piece to be fitted together on top of one of the
patterns; a zinc channel is bent to the outside curvature of the pattern and
a supporting wire inserted into it; each lead joint is soldered together on
the front side and then on the back side; putty is forced into all spaces
under the lead channel; the putty is dried for at least a week; the entire
piece is cleaned with pumice and waxed with automotive finish.
-
Translucent
Glass Mosaics: A design pattern is created and covered with clear
plastic adhesive, sticky side up; glass pieces are shaped one-at-a-time and
placed onto the pattern; a zinc channel is bent to the outside curvature of
the pattern and a supporting wire inserted into it; when all pieces are in
place, an epoxy mixture is pressed between the pieces to hold them together;
the film is removed from the back.
-
Opalescent
(Opaque) Glass Mosaics: A plywood backing is prepared, generally
1.5 " thick around the edges; the pattern is traced onto the plywood;
glass pieces are shaped one-at-a-time and glued onto the backing with
industrial strength adhesive; when all pieces are in place, an edging of
glass pieces covering the sides of the backing is cemented around the
perimeter of the piece; color-matched grout is pressed between the glass
pieces in each color section of the mosaic; grout is removed from the glass
surface as it dries.

Prices
1. Prices are based mainly on the number
of pieces. A distinct piece of glass is needed each time the color changes
or there is a line separating two areas of the design. Mosaics just look
better with more pieces!
2. Count up the number of pieces that you see in
the design and add 20 % more to cover pieces we may need to subdivide for
workability. (There are certain shapes
that we do not permit in glass, like inside corners or points into a piece of
glass. Although these can be cut out with a glass saw, they produce a stress
point that will likely break over time).
3. To get an approximate price, multiply the number of pieces by:
- Leaded stained glass: $10 per piece
- Translucent
mosaic: $2 per piece
- Opalescent
mosaic: $2 per piece
4. If wood framing is desired on a square Mandala, add
$10 per
linear foot for the perimeter (4 x width in feet).
